Sales and Use Tax Issues

Bohonnon Law Firm, LLC - Maritime and Aviation Law Attorneys

Sales tax and use tax are two sides of the same coin. Unfortunately, that coin and many others just like it are going to keep coming out of your pocket if care and attention are not paid to where you purchase your boat and where you keep it.

The Nexus of State-Level Sales and Use Taxes

Unlike federal taxes which are predictable wherever you happen to live, purchase, or use a marine vessel or aircraft—sales and use taxes at the state level can quickly leave a yacht or aircraft owner caught up in a web of tax liabilities. The primary problem is that every state taxes marine vessels differently and imposes different requirements.

For instance, Connecticut requires that the owner of a yacht which spends more than 60 days there during the summer months, must register with the State and is required to pay a six percent sales tax to the State. But suppose you like to spend a portion of your winter in Florida rather than Connecticut. You will most likely will end up with a sales or use tax jeopardy with the State of Florida too.

To avoid these problems with yacht and aircraft ownership and operation, you need the guidance and representation that a recognized and respected maritime and aviation law firm can provide.

How We Can Help

At Bohonnon Law Firm, LLC, we help our clients develop operational plans for their new purchases that are designed to minimize the value-added tax and the amount of boat and aircraft sales tax and use tax they can expect to pay on them. We represent clients from Delaware to Maine and from Connecticut to Florida and are familiar with specific requirements and taxes associated with nearly every state.

In addition, we help our clients to resolve regulatory needs such as obtaining cruising permits for foreign-flagged vessels and with handling U.S. Customs duties and import/export issues.
